Rebuilt Engine Turns Over -No Start

I put a new battery in and the engine turns over now, but won't start.

I have a spark and can smell gas from the exhaust outlet. Could the timing be off?

One very common culprit - distro firing on TDC overlap, not TDC ignition.

What is your fuel system? CIS usually needs to be bled of all air before it will start.

I'm just posting to agree. Take the distributor cap off and see where the rotor is pointing. See if it's pointing at number one cylinder wire coming out of the top of cap. Make sure you are at the "Z1" making on the lower belt pully even even with the engine case split.
Did you time the chains correctly and for your year and model engine. They are not all the same.
Did you check the fuel relay.
I have a secret on / off switch for the gas relay as an extra security measure.... if you have one of those check if it's set to on.
I would be concerned about smelling too much gas.
You can also remove the air filter cover and reach in and prime gas into the system with a few pumps and try to start it

Are you grinding long enough on the starter?
Attaching a video of my first actual start up after I rebuilt it. I had been grinding the starter for quite a while before this, to build up oil/fuel preassure Maybe you can compare the starter rpm...
(We speak norwegian, so you'' probably not understand us...)
