Rocker shaft leaks oil

What is wrong with these pictures. Same cylinder, two views?

HI OldTee
the shaft is in the wrong place, the end should be flush with the thin casting in the cam box, not where you have it at the moment, push it back until it is flush

this is the positioning of the shaft, as you can see it is not in the middle, but off the the side of the thin casting on the left.

regards mike

I don't remember who made them, but there are hot oil resistant rubber "washers" that go into the slots on the shaft. That will also help reduce leaks in addition to what Mike said

Viton RSR seals that EBS sells should solve the problem along with aligning the rockers shafts in the correct positions.

Yup. They had the rubber washers but the position was wrong. It was a long night when I assembled the rockers last month. Note the tint in the oil. It is dye I used to find the leaks. All good now. Shouldn't leak in the future. Just one of the hazards of doing it yourself and forgetting what you read in Dempseys book. Anybody sell zippers on these engines to aid in and out?

OldTee is right. THe rocker shaft should be flush to the outside of the narrow part of the pin boss there. You're not getting good sealing pressure. When you fix it, best to add the RSR seals to be sure. No reason not to, they're cheap insurance.

Hold up a rocker shaft alongside one thats installed in the cam tower, and when the expansion slots in the shaft are at equal distance from the rocker arm it is easy to see where it should be when the bolt is tightened down.

Almost flush with the thinner part of the cam tower is correct. If it's in too far one end of the rocker shaft will expand in that end of the rocker arm bushing, making it very stiff to operate. That is very bad...

The rocker shaft seals really help reduce oil leaks if the shaft bores have any gouges in them from people using different methods to push or pry stuck shafts out and inadvertantly scraping the aluminum bore.
