Bone dry Distributor shaft

I removed the distributor wile fixing some oil leaks and found the saft to be dry, difficult to turn and squeaks. Seems there is no lubrication finding its way up the shaft.

Where does the distr, get is oil from, is it pressure fed or splash from the chain and intermediate gear?

Gert,

Some oil migrates past the drive gear and thrust washers, but the majority is supposed to come from regular maintenance. That means lubing the felt pad under the rotor with motor oil when its replaced.

Like many things on such machinery, its usually ignored until it becomes a problem,...

Thanks Steve,

I understand that the oil on the felt would lubricate the advance curve mechanism but that oil would not find its way down to the main shaft or am i wrong? The top part is fine i.e. the part that carries the rotor but its the main shaft to distributor body that is dry.

When distributors are maintained correctly, some oil does migrate down to the shaft bushings,.....

When these are assembled at the factory, they are supposed to be lubed at that time but sometimes that has not happened. When we rebuild these things, everything get coated with a good assembly lube for this express purpose.
