Average cost of rebuilding heads?
I am going to have to replace the guides, 6 exhaust valves, and possibly the springs (overrev).
How many hours does it take a shop roughly and how much? |
Cory,
Prices vary quite a bit but IMHO, the question you should basking is "who can do a competent and proper job of it?". In these situations, quality is much more important than price. :) :) Some shops are all set up to resurface, machine the seats, R&R the guides/hone to fit everything on 911 heads; others are better equipped for other types of engines. Call me if I can help. :) |

The shop I went to today I feel is very competent. The owner wanted to take about 6-8 hours to put in guides, hone, dress seats, and check springs heights/pressures. Add in the cost of parts and I calculating around $1500 in my head. That is a little more than I anticipated. I was trying to get a consensus of what these cost should be. :) |
For that money they should be twin plugged. The last couple of sets I had done were around $600.00
|
$1200 for mine. Full machine on the seats to stock and mating surface clean 0.010". Everything assembled, cleaned, and ready to put on the engine. I picked them up, so shipping was not included. The company was Extreme Cylinder Heads here in FL. Great rep and Bill is on here, infrequently, but on here. He has some amazing heads he engineered and manf. for bigger engines :) RACE PORN!

It depends what your definition of 'rebuilt' is.
Just new valves, guides, springs, and valve guide seals cost over $650 Add in labour to: - clean, strip, and inspect heads - surface the mating surfaces - replace guides - cut seats - shim springs to correct height - vacuum test valve seating - maybe install a few timecerts on the exhaust stud tappings I think a complete overhaul is going to be closer to $1,200 than $600. EBS did a set of 2.7 heads for my last year. Off the top of my head:
-12 new valves -12 new springs -12 new guides -install guides -valve grind -fly-cut heads -etc etc. I think it was around $1,100. |

I just priced a set of SC heads here in Chas, SC at a very good machine shop. Price is approx $450 plus guides and seals.
|
I pay 600 flat rate (cdn) to have the heads disassemble, inspected, new guides, valve grind, sealing surface machined, bead blasted and reassembled. Extras would be any new valves required and the cost of twin plugging (300) if one desired.
This is the machinest the dealer and all the local independents use. I have head probably 8-10 sets done with excellent results. It all boils down to hours X dollars plus parts. Assuming your machinest is knowledgable. The only variables should be labor rate...... Cheers |

Lance Hayward, www.haywardperformance.com tell him i sent you! :)
Lance is an excellent machinest, does great work including case repair. Give me a shout when you are up here. cheers |
I would contact "cgarr" a user on this forum. He does head work and twin plugging out of his home shop. His prices are very good and the pictures of his work I have seen look excellent. He did my rockers and is a good guy to deal with. I know he has done several heads for guys on this forum. He is in Michigan.
Since I am changing out and upgrading everything I opted for EBS in Nevada. I doubt there are too many shops that do as much of this as they do. |
