The problem is that if you regrind a cam to a higher spec I.E. E to S without welding you end up reducing the base circle of the cam which negatively effects the rocker geometry. You can also end up with very little adjusting screw for the nut to seat on.
MM is notorious for doing this. Years ago I tried explaining this to them and they through me out of their shop.
If you're not willing to listen you aren't willing to learn.

In addition, I think you should take down the picture in post number 3, as I'm sure they are competitors of Pelican...

I've seen a bunch of MM cams that were ground well below the base circle, just as Henry said. This left the rocker adjusting screw virtually bottomed and no ability to adjust the valves.

This is why I either buy new billets or have them reground by a reputable cam manufacturer thats familiar with these engines. Its not a place to cut $$$ corners.

Sand-man,

Pelican replacement part no is 901-105-168-01.
About $1400.

Is is not fair to ask to forum opinion about price difference of $1000.

I am not advertising,
I would like to know if the $400 cam is a OEM part of a cheap repro.
B-quality etc.

Brand Reinshagen!

Yes. It just looked weird being able to see their contact info posted on a site that charges you nothing for so much.

And as another reference point - though our engines are different - I paid $690.00 (pair) for the SC cams that went into my 930 engine a few years ago. I bought them from Imagine Auto. They took my old ones as a core/exchange. I'm not sure where Imagine souces them.

When we first started out with Porsches, we inadvertently tangled up with MM... Never understood why we had such valve adjustment issues with that engine. We adjusted the valves six times in 2,500 miles (three times by a professional shop because we assumed that the problem was US...). When we had that engine autopsied at 2,500 miles, the gentleman who did the work explained that not only were the cams out of spec, they were also out of spec in a different way, left to right...

Thank you for the explanation, Henry.

I would not a buy a coffee cup from them used OR rebuilt. If I did it would leak or be the wrong size
