aux oil cooler
looking for advice/recommendations/suggestions. regarding an additional oil cooler for a 74, 911. runs upward of 220 here in Carolina in the summer, so I don't drive it, which means it is a 3 season driver. I understand a stock right front wheel well radiator style (with fan) is the best answer, but I don't have the approx 1500.00 for used parts right now. I just ran across a used cooler (that installs between the oil tank and the engine cooler) - basically replaces the "S" hose....anyone have any experience with that cooler? Performance part # 913349.
would appreciate any input,,,,thanks, marion..

Apparently you don't have lines to a trombone cooler. All the rear mounted units will not help to any degree. You need oil volume, surface area and air flow or at least 2 out of three. That said your engine doesn't need a full radiator and fan. The larger engines had more problem with heat.
Getting factory or Elephant lines with a thermostat is really the best solution. My car would have had a trombone if it came with AC - it gets REALLY hot here, so most of the summer I only drive to work in the AM and drive out of covered parking there for a hot drive home. I recently rebuilt my engine and when it actually worked I installed the missing external cooler. I decided to fit a 28 brass tube cooler with Elephant lines and plumbing. I liked the brass cooler for its nautical feel and even polished the brass before installing. I wish my thermostat opened more often. I ran at the track and got to 200 degrees - no further. I don't use my Kool Kollar anymore - it wouldn't fit over the Filter Mag.

I agree that the S hose cooler is useless.
Start with the basics. Do you have an 11 blade fan? Have you checked the engine oil cooler to see if the fins are open? Usually what happens is the thermostat o-ring leaks and the oil runs into the oil cooler, blocking the airflow. I would make sure the existing system is working right before investing in external coolers.

Here are a couple of options. When completed the lines are undetectable from the outside..

thanks for the input...lots to consider..
. notmytarga -- ihnteresting that you think the 2.7 will be ok with a loop cooler instead of a radiator style? have you had both? that would certainly be better for my budget. Also do you think braided or solid lines the best? and,, did the kool kollar help any? . john_cramer - i do have the upgraded fan,and mad a good effort at cleaning the on engine cooler while laying on my back. Any suggestions (instructions) for other ways to ensure what i have is working at its best? . Henry Schmidt - wow, what a good looking job... i see you went with a radiator. wondering why the radiator and not the loop? . thanks marion..

There are two radiators. One in each fender.
We went with state of the art Setrab cooler because they offer the best cooling for the space we have to work with, The engine is a short stroke, 3.2 twin plug MFI that should make 300hp so cooling is imperative. The braided line is neoprene, with braided stainless inner weave and the outer coating is an Aramid fibre braid made by Goodrich.

Henry, what size and thread fittings are you using in that installation?

-12 AN, which is basically 3/4 inch.

Hi Henry, I measured up a -12 AN hose fitting today. the bore is somewhat smaller than the original sill (rocker) oil lines I had. Do you consider this to be a problem or am i worrying unnesecarily as usual?
Would it be too much to ask you to post a diagram of this installation with components and pipe sizes identified? andy Last edited by haasad; 02-06-2009 at 10:44 AM.. Reason: Another question arose |

The rationale for skipping the radiator type heater was a combination of engine demand/need, period correctness and budget. I considered adding the lines and loop cooler to see how it ran, but no one was willing to give me their old loop cooler so the 28 tube was only a little more expensive. Using the Elephant finned lines and the 28 tube cooler, which is a bit more effective than the trombone loop cooler, I figured I would have a dramatic improvement over the no-external cooler setup that I had previous to the rebuild. Most of the improvement is because the external thermostat starts to open at 180 deg F and brings online the oil volume and large surface area of the lines and tubes. I haven't done a Thunderhill DE day yet when it was hot - but I can't get the gauge temps to read above 200 or so in any situation. I used an IR thermometer for tires and lines and the whole oil system after hot-laps was at 190-200 except for the oil tank which read 240 - I don't have a theory on that one yet other than I was measuring the temp of oil bypassing the thermostat. Braided and flexible lines aren't going to provide cooling along their length - so your cooler(s) are going to do all the work - they need good airflow. If I was going twin-plug or other high power setups or a 3.0 engine then max cooling would have been a demand. For track use a front spoiler mount is the only real solution short of Henry's two fender with airflow setup.
