New AA cylinder/piston set or used mahle + oversized Pistons??

Hi,

My set of Mahle cylinders & Pistons are just out of spec, so I will need to get a different set in the near future for my 2.2 T.

I have seen many threads on AA sets, QSC sets and JE pistons with as many opinions.

As far as I can see, I have 2 options (considering I don't want to fork out 5K for a set of new Mahle's)

New set of AA high performance 2.2 84mm OR my used Mahle cylinders resized and honed with new specially made JE pistons (Oversized)

What would be my best option? Does AA also offer the 'T' 8.6:1 compression set?

Thanks for all your thoughts

The other thing to think about is that your 2.2L T pistons are cast iron cylinders. They have poor heat disipation. Probably fine if you are just doing the stock thing with them. E's and S's have Brial cylinders which are iron cylinders with aluminum cast over them. A little better, but still not fantastic.

The qsc or new Mahle's are plated aluminum which would support more Hp options and make a cooler running motor.

Thanks

Ed

Thanks Ed. The use for my 'T' is just road use, so no circuit or track days, so I guess the cast iron cylinders should be ok.

Any experiences with QSC or AA?

I have used Wiseco, JE and Ross, but not the QSC or AA. I have used the QSC cylinders with mixed results.

The Ross pistons are nice at a good price point. May be worth looking into them.

Thanks

Ed

We have recently been approached by AA to review their Biral 84mm 911 Porsche pistons and cylinders and we find them to be a very nice alternative to the Mahle and other higher priced options.
We have great things to say about Perfect Bore and LN Nickies given a budget that is appropriate.
We would also suggest boring a set of cylinders to .040 and running a set of custom JEs. That option will cost more than the AA biral set but the AA pistons are cast and will not support high out put engines.
I believe you can also special order AA cylinders with JE pistons at a higher price.
The smaller QSC cylinders offer some challenges so be careful when ordering them.
Our experience with the 86 mm 911 cylinder is that they were designed incorrectly and are useless. Of course they may have redesigned that product so until I see a newer model I have to suggest that you stay away.

Thanks Henry! Really appreciate your feedback.

That AA 84mm sounds good. one question though, I have a T engine with standard 8.6:1 compression. Does it matter that this AA set has a higher compression than the standard T set?

Also, you stated in previous posts that you will need to check the set before install. Are they prone to be off? I don't live in the states, so is going to be hard for me to do.

Thanks again!

AA has a high and low compression set. choose the set that fits your needs.

As for quality control I would suggest you buy the product from a vender who offers that service.
