Broken Piston: How much is this mistake going to cost?
So I, being a curious sort, have taken on a 1968 911T project car (88000 miles). The engine has been in need of a serious rebuild as the pistons have seized themselves in the cylinders. I'm pretty sure that was because it sat around so long, and some of the cylinders have corroded slightly.
Anyway, today I got to the pistons. After getting the cylinders out, the crankshaft could finally turn freely. As I told you, I'm the curious sort, so I rotated the crankshaft several times to see the timing of the pistons, and somehow, I managed to cause the damage shown in the attached picture. I'm pretty sure at some point early on, I confused the piston wedging itself against the engine for a stuck piston in a corroded cylinder. ![]() The question is then, how hard is it to find a replacement piston for this car? What should I look for? I'm not really interested in a new piston/cylinder set. The cylinders (despite the corrosion) seem to be in good shape so it would be fun to keep them, not too mention significantly less expensive. The part number shown in the photo below is "E Mahle" "84V48 CO11+". ![]() Thanks for your help. |
