My Top-End Rebuild
Since my last question thread is slowly sifting to the bottom, I thought I'd make a rebuild thread since I'm quite certain I will have a few more questions. Unfortunately I'm not very good about taking in-progress pics but here's what I've got thus far:
Cloudy-day pics from when I bought the car: ![]() The engine on the floor; I wasn't able to get a floor in this garage before winter so the whole project has been done in gravel ![]() ![]() Fast Forward to this week: ![]() ![]() Heh, yes the parts are on there "to keep things from falling in" ![]() So as it sits now I have torqued the heads per the Bentley 15NM + 90Degrees procedure which, I take it, no one uses? I finally ordered Wayne's book today and I may consider redoing my head studs but I wonder if anyone had any experience with removing them and not redoing the Camtower to Head 574-Seal? Bentley didn't mention a progressive cross pattern (just to use cross pattern) while torqueing head bolts; I set them all finger tight, then to 15NM first, and then 90Degree on each head starting with #6 all in cross pattern. My cams spin smoothly but... Now I've got visions of pulled studs, broken studs, loose nuts, and oil leaks dancing through my head. I'm very nervous. I've had the car off the road for nearly 6 Months (probably - I don't care to add up the time) and I don't want to have to (at best) pull the engine again or (at worst) grenade the one I have. Any Insight guys?

You really need to have all steel studs.
The head torque needs to be done from the middle out first tightening the stud then the furthest away on the same head. Need to lube the threads of the head nuts and studs so they torque smoothly 3.2 doesnt have head gaskets so there is nothing to replace if you open it back up again for your own sanity Bruce |
