Finding TDC with no dist or cam pulley markers
hi again
Feel a little stupid but its best to ask.... In my haste to get everything off the to the plater I removed the dizy (to access fan strap) and the crankshaft pulley. The engine has since been carefully cranked to close the valves so that I could safely extract the exhaust studs. My two questions are: How do I reinstall the dizy so that it is correctly positioned to TDC? How do I reinstall the pulley so that it is correctly positioned to TDC? Thanks to those that reply Rhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/smileys/smileys1.htm# |

the pulley has a dowel that only fits the crank in one place.
once the pulley is on, remove the left upper valve cover and watch the #1 intake rocker as you turn the engine clockwise. when the Z1 notch on the pulley is lined up with the mark on the fan housing, you have two possibilities , either #1 or #4 at TDC. watch the rocker open and close the valve and then continue turning to the Z1 mark and check that you have valve clearance on that #1 rocker. then install the distributor with the rotor tip lining up with the notch on the top edge of the distributor housing. there is usually some evidence of the mark the hold-down nut and washer made on the distributor hold down bracket, so align that too. that should get you started. time with a light when it's running.

JW gives (as ever) sage advice, the crank pulley only goes on one way. Don't forget the correct torque.
To set the distributor I use a whistle that goes in the plug hole. Put the pulley on and turn the crank until the whistle sounds and then stops with the Z1 mark opposite the notch in the blower housing, that's TDC compression. Insert the distributor in the hole with the rotor tip pointing at the notch in the distributor housing and tighten the clamp. Put the cap with wires on and start the engine and set timing. To check compression TDC with a finger you would have to have a finger like ET! ![]()

The pin in the pulley is at 9 oclock
Intake valve cover left side. Remove and when the pulley is TDC and the #1 intake is loose, you have TDC #1 Install dist to the mark on the edge Bruce |

My suggestion is to not make this task any more complicated than it has to be. IMO, pulling a valve cover to see where the rocker arm sits is going to get old after 1 time, especially if there's an easier, faster way. I think anyone who twists wrenches is in favor of saving time as long as the task isn't compromised. Those of you with time and valve cover gaskets to burn can disregard this.
See this tool? It's a 2-piece compression gauge ![]() Every owner who works on his vehicle should have one. It's one of the basic diagnostic tools (about $30). In lieu of a long ET-like finger, screw the hose into the spark plug opening. Without the gauge installed, you now have an extension to feel pressure as the piston approaches TDC on the compression stroke. Sherwood |

i figure that few people have that long hose, so checking rocker clearance would be for he majority. FWIW i use the long hose with a finger over the end.
