How clean is clean for a case?

Cleaning my case and not sure how far to go.

First pic, bearing race. Black marks all inside it. Can't feel them and they don't go away with nylon bristles.

Similar black coloration on case parting line.

Then, these scaly white spots, look like light surface corrosion from water. This comes off pretty easily with a scrubbing pad, but some crevices are hard to reach. Do I need to get it all out?

Maxx, in the pictures, what you have pointed out, to me... looks like corrosion. I could be wrong. I woudl think thats what it is... especially if you cant get it off with a brush. If it is corrosion, the only thing to take it off would be to sand it out...and that would not be good. I think it woyld be fine just to leave it like it is... as long as its surgically clean as far as dirt, dust, and foreign objects go....

As far as your question... how clean is clean??? Well, I have to toot my own horn here..LOL...

Thanks, Brad. I remember the pics of your case. Great, work. I am definitely not looking to get even close to that.

I agree, that the white, scaly, powdery spots are likely corrosion. It comes off pretty easily so I'll just remove it by hand with brake cleaner. The darker stuff on the bores and parting lines isn't pretty, but it's more like a stain. I guess if it can't come off, then it's not an issue.

Thanks,
Maxx

People like you should live with attendants in white smocks. :)

Good job. Perhaps you are unemployed and have time for this!

How clean is clean. . .

That looks like corrosion on the bearing saddle I would check the dimensions. If it's just a discoloration no big deal.

Thanks, John. You used dry ice or soda blasting right?

In my case (no pun intended), everything checks out dimensionally. So I guess I'll just reclean all interior surfaces with brake cleaner and call it good.

Brad,

You spend all that time cleaning and polishing that case and then set it down on the floor! Sheesh!

Damn Brad!
As far as clean- I have never done anything (for any motor) more exotic than use very hot water through a garden hose with petroleum degreaser first, then a good water soluable degreaser for the second round. It has work ok for me even though I know there is room for improvment.

"How clean is clean for a case?"

Ask yourself one question: Would I be content boiling my case in a barrel of water and use that water to make a nice pot of french press coffee? If "NO", scrub, rinse, repeat until "Yes".
