Camgrinder

The last 8 or 9 months has been very difficult for us. With the economy in the shape it is in, it has been very tough to survive. For a few months I actually took a part time job to make ends meet.
All of this is no excuse for poor customer service. Grinding camshafts is what I do, being a business man is something I am still learning. I just wish I could learn during a better times. I admit, a few jobs took way to long to finish. ( I apologize to Bill K.) But we did get a lot of work done in a reasonable time frame.
Thanks John

What kind of grinder do you have?

I have a Berco RAC-1500 and a Van Norman model 253.

jpnovak 05-15-2009 04:45 PM

John, good to hear you are still around and seem to be weathering the economic storm. This time is difficult for everyone.

My engine runs great thanks to your cam grind. It was exactly what I wanted.

Henry Schmidt 05-15-2009 04:49 PM

Well John, welcome to the world of small business.
Control is an illusion and all we can do is take responsibility for our actions.
I for one have had great service from you throughout our association and will continue even through hard times.
I hope things get back on track and your business rewards all your hard work.
Cheers

I recommend no one else's expertise and creativity when it comes to cams. No one. Hopefully the ones I send keep coming, because I'd be lost on my motors without a custom ground DC cam.

alniki 05-16-2009 02:32 AM

John, I got a very fast reply from you about cam inquiry last month when I broke my engine and was planning for a rebuild. The project was aborted later due to a broken engine case. You definitely will have my business in the very near future. Keep hanging on.

Best,

Michael

Hang in there John. What you learn running a business during bad economic times they don't teach in school.

Best of luck.

John, you reground my SC cams to DC15 last year with a short turnaround time and for a very reasonable price. I could not be happier with the result, this engine runs smooth with lots of torque in the low end, perfect for my street driving. I wish you the best for your business.

It sounds like you've already learned the lesson about having back-up plans, because you're doing it. The best run businesses make a point of "keeping their powder dry" and making sure that they have one shot left when everyone else has run out.

Hang in there, the economy is picking up in spite of many people's efforts to fix it.

jacksd3 05-16-2009 02:52 PM

I have some cams I want to send to you for work. Sent you an email.

Hang in there. Best of luck to you.

CBRacerX 05-16-2009 09:29 PM

Loved the work you did for me and recommend you every chance I get. Do what you have to so that when the recovery kicks you are still standing.

Good luck!

John I appreciated your responses to me questions a while back

I will hopefully be in touch in a couple of weeks with an order...(finally!)

Cheers

I replied, you should have an email. Thanks

camgrinder 05-17-2009 08:15 AM

Thanks for all the positive replys!

Kenik, did you ever dyno the car with the DC30 cams?

jacksd3 05-17-2009 01:13 PM

John is awesome and I feel lucky to have access to him on this board.

mppickett 05-17-2009 04:16 PM

John,

We're all wishing you the best of luck. You've been a great support to our Porsche community in addition to providing great cams.

Best wishes.

SchnellSchweitz 05-17-2009 05:34 PM

Hi John,

Saw your story on Pelican... Need a quote on grinding 2 camshaft for a 3.0L. I sent you a private message as well..

Thank you.

Eric J.

haycait911 05-18-2009 09:58 PM

hi John. I got a set of cams from you last fall as mentioned here:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/475180-3-0-915-swb-perfect-combo.html

service was impeccable and the cams are great. ridiculous low-end pull. I'll be dynoing the car when I get things dialed in, will post results and pm you a link. thanks and here's to the economic turnaround coming sooner than later. Don.

2.70Racer 05-19-2009 03:51 PM

I'm glad to see you are still at it. The "solex" cams you supplied a couple years ago are running great. If I can do anything for you, let me know.
Thanks and hang in there,

jbell959 05-19-2009 04:20 PM

I think I have 5 sets of your cams and nothing but great experiences working with you... Hang in there - the Porsche community needs you!!

shbop 05-19-2009 07:17 PM

Another satisfied customer, in Hawaii.

Jeff Alton 05-19-2009 09:40 PM

I have used multiple sets of John's cams in motors I have built. Same for reground rockers. His work in excellent and I have been more than satisfied!

John, as Henry says "welcome to the world of small business" ! :)
The workmanship part is the easy part. I struggle daily with the customer service end as does most every small business going.

As I type this I my girlfriend/assistant is madly working in Excell to streamline our ordering/tracking/shipping details so we can deliver products in much more timely fashion......

You will be fine, the workmanship pulls you through until you have the CS end of things working smoothly.

Cheers

Trog 05-20-2009 06:53 AM

John,

Please hang in there. My engine is scheduled for a rebuild this winter and I need your cam and rocker assistance.

jacksd3 05-23-2009 04:40 AM

I'm a new and satisfied customer. John went the extra mile for me. I bought a set of Carrera 3.2 cams on ebay and sent them to John this past week. He is re-grinding the left one and adding the drive for the scavenge pump. The right one he is allowing me to trade in for a C2 cam with the power steering drive that I need for my 965. All for a great price!

strokher racing 05-23-2009 01:31 PM

John has always been very helpful with my combo. I run his custom cams in my engine. It has more in it, but it made 700rwhp at 15 pounds and 801rwhp at 20-21......so you be the judge.

Number1_dog 05-28-2009 08:28 AM

Gotta let people know the Good Stuff when it happens.

I sent my 1979 SC cams to John ( for a 964 profile regrind) on Friday May 22, 2009 through the Post office ( from Long Island NY) and I just received notification from UPS that my re-
ground cams are going to be delivered on June 3, 2009.

MrPerkles 06-02-2009 12:07 AM

+1 on John,I recently asked about buying new cams and after seeing my spec told me to stick with what I have got.
Very honest and a swift response,he will get further business from me in the future

Peterfrans 02-10-2010 12:22 AM

I had some problems with wear on my rockers, probably due to some oiling issue. John checked out the cams and supplied new rockers at a great price. I am very impressed and satisfied with his customer service.

Thanks John!

racing97 02-10-2010 06:30 AM

John do you grind any other cams?

regards

camgrinder 02-10-2010 07:16 AM

Your welcome Peter!

Yes racing97, I do other type of camshafts.

K24madness 02-10-2010 03:36 PM

Another very happy camper here! Although I have yet to install my DC21's the process of discussing and evaluating my needs were unmatched in other aspects of my build. I am one of those guys that is very technical and hates the old "this is what you want" speech. Johns approach was completely different. He took to time to talk about all aspects of the cams specs, validated some things I knew and brought to light some things I had not considered. I have 100% confidence in his work.

Carrerax 02-10-2010 03:49 PM

John, I am hoping to send a set of cams to you in a few weeks! Thanks for taking the time to reply to my emails and questions! The porsche world needs guys like you!

kenikh 02-11-2010 06:20 AM

I love John's work so much, I just bought a set of his mod-solex cams from a guy who didn't need them even though I have no immediate need for them. The cams are just THAT GOOD. That makes a SEVENTH set of cams I've owned that John has either touched or made. :D

Pierre911SC 02-11-2010 10:13 AM

Hello John,

Thank you, for the advise and supply of GT2-104 cams & rockers,
for my 3.2ss rebuilt.

MrPerkles 02-11-2010 10:46 AM

Glenn at Pelican Parts 02-13-2010 10:16 PM

wow, I just stumbled onto this thread and am impressed with all the positive comments. Would you mind sending me a PM with a quote for regrinding a set of stock 2.2S cams? I'm restoring a Conda Green 71S Coupe and will probably stay with a stock configured engine but I'm open to any suggestions. TIA

kenikh 02-13-2010 10:35 PM

When John reground my pitted S cams to Mod-S it was just over $300, IIRC. Fair was an understatment on price.
