blind holes in cases ?????

Hi Everyone, i,m having new head bolts put into my 1976 2.7 and the guy who,s doing the work has come back to me with an up date saying that my cases look like early mag cases and that the bolt holes are blind holes and could be a problem, first what are blind holes, as i,ve never heard or seen anything about blind holes on this forum and my cases check out to be later mag cases by the engine number, is my engine builder talking aload of bull or is it something i don,t now about and should i be taking my engine away from him. Any help would be great,

cheers Rik...

HI Rik...
the term "blind" hole, is when a hole is drilled into a material, but not through, and then taped to fit a bolt or stud, the hole is NOT drilled right through the material, why are you changing your head STUDS (not bolts) or has the threads pulled out of the casing??, to change the studs, it should be just a matter of taking the old ones out and replacing with the new to the correct length, with a small amount of lock tight to hold the stud, if to much is used in the blind hole the casing will swell, with the engine heat, in where the cylinder fits and I have seen the casing split and the cylinders are very tight to remove.

regards mike

Hi Mike, i,m changing the studs as two or three look like they,ve pulled, i asked the question about the blind hole because the garage that is doing the work made it sound like a big deal, so there,s no problem with them being like this?. many thanks Rik

The holes for the head studs are supposed to be blind. Get your case back as soon as possible and take it to someone who knows Porsches.

HI Rik...

will you be going to the auto jumble at Husborne Crawley on Sat', if so bring the cases with you and I will take a look at them for you. If the studs have just pulled, then the cases just need some time surts fitting and the studs re fitting.

regards mike

HI Rik...
if you just require the 2 or 3 then yes, but all of them will take a little longer.
