white smoke after engine rebuild 911sc
My car is finally ready after 2 years work? (complete make-over). I just wanted to start the car. He started immediately but out of the exhaust en under the motor came a lot of white smoke. After 4 minutes I stopped the engine because I couldn't see anymore because of the smoke. I rebuild-ed the motor last year. It was the first time I started the motor after this rebuild.
Is this normal ? What can be the problem ? Thanks ! 911 SC -79 |

How's your oil level, first of all.
Although, you must have the car up to operating temperature and idling on a flat surface to check the dipstick.

How long did you let it run? How did it sound? The reason I ask is it is somewhat normal for smoke after a rebuild, until it burns off and the seals seat. My last 3.8 race engine smoked at start up until we got the MoTeC tuned, which took 2 hours easy, under load conditions. I would let it run a bit and let temps get up and the parts hot..

I let it run for 4 minutes. There was so much smoke in my garage, I couldn't see anything.
I filled the car with 12 liters of oil (10W40). Maybe too much because the oil doesn't go to the oil cooler yet, when the motor is cold. Right or wrong ? |

You should fill it with 8 US quarts of oil, then bring the motor up to operating temperature and confirm the front oil cooler thermostat is open and the lines are full. Then, check the oil using the normal procedure and add oil to bring the level to midway between the dipstick marks or to the level of your choosing. It should be about 11 quarts total from a dry engine.
