oil capacity 1974 911 s
I have been working on a 1974 911s 2.7 and just added 6 liters of oil to a completely dry engine, but I don't think that is enough. Anyone know where I can find the correct capacity?
Thanks much. |

8 quarts or 11 quarts if you have a front mounted oil cooler.
Add 6 quarts, start the car, let it warm up so the thermostat opens, then add the amount of oil needed to bring the oil tank level to midway between the dipstick marks with the car running at operating temperature on a level surface. Sorry, I do not recall the metric/english conversion for liters/quarts

The 74 S calls for 13 liters for a completely dry system. So no oil in the lines, coolers, oil tank or engine.

Funny enough, 1 L = 1 Qt (ok, so its actually 1 L = 1.05668821 US quarts). Given the dipstick min-max is more than 1Qt (at least mine is) you have a healthy window for adding oil.
Still, I'd follow Flieger's method. I've seen several threads about excess smoke on 1st startup/warm-up post rebuild (or oil change if done slowly) because the front cooler thermostat hadn't opened. 6-7Qts to start then check it as soon as its running and be prepared to add more. Check again once the temp starts to rise. The front cooler thermostat should open at 180F, expect to add more after that.
