Should I use titanium valve spring retainers on rebuilt heads?
Hello
I am building a (10.5 to 1) 2.7 litre engine for my 914-6. I purchased some twin plug heads from a pelican that came with high performance spring and titanium valve retainers/seats. Working with my local machine shop he recomended I avoid the high performance springs. He said these where almost twice as stiff as stock. I agreed, I dont plan on ever revving more than 6500. ITs not a race car, just occasional track days and fun drives. I dont need the extra wear. I bought a new set of springs (stock) and planned to use the titanium keepers. My machine shop wants to use stock stuff to setup the valve height spring clearance correctly. I have not selected cams yet. Will probably use camgrinder. So is it critical to use the stock retainers/seats with stock springs or should I use the sexy titanium ones. thanks Daron |

Ti retainers
I would not use the Ti retainers on a street car or hot rod, they need to be inspected regular and are a short life part and really are for race engines that come apart at 25 to 50 hrs.

I agree, there is no use for titanium in an engine that will max at 6500 RPM. Especially on the street.
Check with JB Racing on a spring / retainer combination BTW....stay away from the factory retainer if you plan to add additional spring pressure. They will fail. Good luck
