964 Cam Timing

One cam has a 964 with a dot, and one has 964 with a perpendicular line. The sprockets and chain rails are in so I can't see the keyways without taking it all apart.

Can anyone confirm that the 964 dot/slash is set to top for 1-3, and down for 4-6. I'm just working from Wayne's book, and my Bentley 3.2 book. Can anybody point me to a good guide for 964 cam timing.

I'm missing something, and even more hair!

Edit:

I figured out several things. The only way I figure things out

1) 964 stamp does not mean top of canmshaft.

2) Only one cam had a punch mark

3) Its a real ***** to time the cams if they in the wrong side

4) If you put all the rocker shafts in, you get to take em out and do them all over if number 3 above applies.

5) long chain rails will not go in if chain box is bolted down

6) sprockets will not go on shafts if chain rails are tightened down

Looks like both cams with the punch mark up. These cams must be timed in this fasion. If you can't get it to work properly you may need to bribe a local pellican head into coming to aid you. Once you get used to this method you will never want to go back to lining up punch marks and scribes! This is very percise... hope this helps
