Wink Replacing Speedo cable on '69E and Tach issue

After changing the tranny in my '69E, I have the following questions:

1) I need to replace the speedometer cable and cannot get the speedometer out of the dash. I have even gone so far as to read the service manual which says to work it out with a screw-driver, being careful not to damage the ring. But I have worked with a nylon tool and screwdriver and it just doesn't want to budge. I have scrached the paint on the background enough and it is time to ask for help. I looked in Pelican archives but can't find any direct reference. Do I have to remove the trip odometer dial first?

2) I am sure that the last speedometer cable broke because the gear (that goes into the side of the transmission housing) was loose and turned in such a way that it caused a sharp bend in the cable. In trying to tighten it (presumed it needed to be tightened in a straight line with the opening in the body so that the cable goes in straight) I am having trouble getting a tool in there to get a hold on it. Any suggestions. There are two nuts and I am not sure what the correct approach is.

3) When the engine went back in, I have lost the tach. I have a perma tune on the car and I cant find a direct line to the distributor. The white female end from the CD unit is not hooked up. There is a message thread from a few years ago with a picture of a distributor and directions for hookup. But my "E" does not have the exterior plugs like the picture. Anything obvious that I am missing? Or am I just not locating the male end of the circuit.

The 901 trans is suposed to have a right angle drive off the trans so the cable isnt bent to fit.

speedo

Your car should have a speedo held in by a rubber sleeve. This system is very easy to remove especially if you push it out from behind, However it may have been replaced by an earlier unit with studs, 2 small brackets and 2 finger tightning nuts. Take out the clock or other instrument and look or feel around to see what you have. If you need the right angle fitting for the speedo cable at the trans I have some. On a stock set up the purple and black wire runs the tack.
