Update! Would say I am 90% done. Spent about 5 hours cleaning and scrubbing. Only 2 spiders came out of it alive...
![]() Thanks for all the input guys. I am going to just go black on everything (tin, etc), and a red fan (yeah I know....lol). Thinking of making the Porsche Valve covers red too...? Purple stuff worked! Need a putty knife to get rid of the thick stuff. And 10 pairs of rubber gloves... ![]() The goods ![]() Before ![]() One clean, one still dirty (will paint with high temp black) ![]() Yep, a toothbrush! ![]() The aftermath ![]() Much cleaner ![]() Not perfect, but much much better... |

Beautiful cleanup. If you have access to a sandblaster, it could do a good job on the heat exchangers and lower valve covers.

Driveway got sprayed after the engine with cleaner. Good as new!
Was putting the engine back together, and one of the tensioner collars I got from a fellow pelican actually cracked when I installed it...! So, just ordered a new set from Pelican, and will continue that job when they get here. Its coming along...! |

Got mice?
"I'D BE INTERESTED IN THE MICE IF THEY'RE STILL AVAILABLE, AND FRESH." ![]() I have a complete set of chain sprockets and hardware , etc. for sale from a 1970 2.2 that I parted out..... if you are interested. The trailing arms, tensioners, and the 2 flanges sold fast like the rest of this engine. ![]() ![]() |

Jerry1- The rebuild was pretty easy. I broke a couple of the injector nozzles and had to buy some used ones from the guys here. Very very easy. Decided to delete the circuit as well on both, as I was told they just leak anyway.
911Tweaks- If I had to do it again, I would use one can PER 3 carbs... The first 3 cleaned up really easily, but by the time I did the other side, the dip was pretty dirty, and the parts came out clean of crud, but covered in "old crud"... Really kicks butt though! |

Got the car in June, so I feel pretty good about my timeline. Putting the engine in on Friday, and hoping it starts up after 15 years of snow and mice. I will get on Herr and find out the correct procedure for firing up and old engine after all that time. I know numerous oil changes are in my future...!
