Not just a coin, that is the Bluenose on there eh!
Are they attracted to a magnet?

Looks like there must be a piston missing maybe an oil control ring

They are magnetic. All oil rings are accounted for except the one I broke but these bits are separate from the oil ring.

To be safe I split the case. I discovered an oil leak on the bottom front corner of the motor where I also found some more metal bits. I am still at a loss to what the bits are but they didn't damage the motor and the internals look good.

Is the big snap ring still on the front of your crank at the dizzy drive gear? Is that a chip our of your alum pump gear?

Have you removed the intermediate shaft yet? Is that bearing parts from the shaft bearings?

The gears all look good with no chips. I will check the snap ring in the morning. Thanks!

That one intermediate shaft bearing in the picture shows excessive wear compared the the main bearings. Waiting to see more pictures.

I'd ask what oil was being used and how often it was changed.

I've only owned the car for a few months. I bought it for $5,000 with no history but judging by the condition of the body and excessive rust on the rear inner fender and rockers, I know it was not taken care of. I own a 964 as well and took on this project first before I attempt a rebuild on the 3.6.
I will post more pics once I remove the oil pump. |

If the engine was repaired but not split, say you blew a piston, swallowed a valve, etc and some junk was left inside it would find its way to the oil pump area and just rest there,.
I have seen that before. Bruce |

valve spring bits? the spring seat also has a lip that can get beat up, rounded over and broken off when a broken valve spring beats on it for a long time. seem plenty of them with no remaining lip at all.

Well its not the bearings and everything in the case is intact... I agree the bits are probably from a previous repair or heads.
Time to order more parts from our host |

Derk... funny slip there on my last post... I ment to type Carnival Hotel OR the UNB. I believe that is the name of the hotel that has a carnival wheel inside it... it is located at a rotary very close to UNB... I have not been up that way since 92'... pm me if we need to discuss further as I do not want to interrupt this thread.

See if you can match the broken pieces by the way they broke apart, it might give you an idea of the diameter of the object and that should narrow the search down.
I do tend to agree with one of the posters in so far as it might be the result of a prior problem, where the case was not split and the parts found their way to the bottom of the case.
