3.2 Carrera budget build q's

My Carrera has a smoking issue that I suspect is mostly a case of bad guides. However, I did do a comp test and found #3 to have only 100psi where all others were high 140's and one cyl high as 165psi. The high cyl I believe is excess oil due to the guide being markedly worse than the others as the plug came out dark with a bit of buildup on it.

I'm hoping #3 is ok as the plug looked great. A fellow P-car enthusiast speculated that there may be a bit of carbon holding the exhaust valve open. I'm looking to do a leak down this week to better diagnose the problem.

I really balk at the idea of a complete rebuild as the car only has 67k on it. At worst I hope to do a hone/re-ring.

Also, I picked up a spare set of 3.2 heads to rebuild. I'm figuring on buying guides(of course), new exhaust valves and seals. I've been told by a reputable Porsche shop that I may have to replace intake valves as well due to wear(tapered stems). Should I replace springs as well? again the car has low miles and I find it hard to believe that they may be worn(losing tension).

Any feedback is appreciated!

Tom

Hawaii is hard on high performance cars. The speed limit is what? 45mph except for a short spurt here or there and the cops love to give tickets. That is what I remember from my years there in the late 50s and I doubt it has changed. Do a top, leave the cylinders alone unless they show something ugly when the heads are off. Do it right with new valves, guides, springs and proper machining. Send them to the experts in California. You might benefit from lowering the compression ration some.

Pics are nice.

Thanks for the reply, I've been calling a few shops on the mainland as well as sending emails to same for quotes on the work. Prices vary a good bit, but I don't really trust anyone locally to do the work so once I get a better idea of the cost, away they'll go. I'm just praying I won't need cylinders/pistons as that would further delay my long overdue RS project

I would post some pics but the motor is still in the car and I'm driving it still on a semi-regular basis. It just bugs the crap out of me to be at a stoplight and see puffs of smoke wafting from the rear of my car
