JE pistons in original cylanders?
Can this be done, or do you need to get a differenct cylander to accept the JE pistons? Reason for asking: the cost differential between JE and Mahle.
Thanks Scott |

Yes - JE pistons and Biral cylinders are fine, although you should tell your supplier what kind of cylinder you will run so they can optimize the piston clearances. Nickies are the best cylinder for JEs since the alloys are a perfect match and exspand identically.

I dont have a lot of knowledge on this, but 2 engine builds I did with these. 11:1 JE pistons in 3.0L cylinders naturally aspirated and 7:1 JE pistons in perfectbore 3.2 cylinders seeing 10psi supercharged 350hp.
Both work well.

I have heard that Porsche Mahle pistons wristpin is slightly offset while the JE piston wristpin is centered and not offset.
It may be hearsay, but I've heard this offset makes a difference in piston skirt wear or scuffing especially in a horizontally opposed boxer engines because of the effects of gravity, and downward thrust and connecting rod angle during the power stroke. This is a different situation than the comparison of expansion rates between JE forged alloy pistons and different cylinders in an air cooled motor. |
