I assembled my engine completely on a HD ball-bearing rotary plate on the bench, but w/o heat exchangers which were installed once the engine was in place. I did this not so much to avoid deforming the crank but because of a lack of floor space for an engine stand. Still, I'm glad I did it that way. The mg case requires all the support it can use to make sure the crank doesn't bind.
