Sleeves

Well it getting time to rebuild my 1979 3.0 after discovering a broken head stud on #6. She only has 149,000 miles on her
I do not know if I have Mahles or Nickies for cylinders, My rebuilder says it does not matter, he just will bore and sleeve the cylinders and use 6 new JE pistons, along with all the other items to do. I would like to turn it into a 3.2, with new cam and larger displacement. Has anyone heard of sleeving cylinders on these engines? Is this possible?

I have my 78 3.0 SC apart right now doing an engine update. If you look at the cylinder wall thickness, it's hard to believe you could bore the cylinder and then sleeve it. Either the sleeve would be paper thin or the cylinder would be paper thin. Wait until you get it apart before you make any dicissions about this. I was prepared to send cylinders out to be re-plated only to learn I had Mahle / Nicasil barrels as opposed to the Alusil barrels. If you have Mahles, you will be amazed at the condition they are in. My car has 97,000 on it and the cylinders show next to no wear.

If you have Alusil cylinders you can send them to Millennium in Wisconsin and they will re-plate them with Nicasil. The Alusil cannot be honed and it's not wise to try to reuse these without re-plating. The Nicasil can be honed and it's OK to re-use them, I am. It's pretty easy to tell which is which. One is the cylinder will say Mahle on the side, which is good, and the Nicasil plating will attract a magnet where the Alusil will not.

Note that you cannot run pistons that came with Alusil barrels in the Nicasil barrels and vice versa. So long story short, I would reuse the Nicasil barrells as is (unless they are damaged or don't measure) with new coated JE pistons. If you have Alusil, send them off for a re-plate and run the same JE pistons.

I would question the mechanic if he has ever worked on a 911 in the past, the sleeving comment raises a red flag.

Best idea would be to use fresh nicasils, either NOS or some decent used ones.

11 fins= Nikasol
10 fins= Alusil.

I have Alusils, which I intend on re-ringing.
79 911sc 107,000.00 miles. Now in boxes, in my house.

Leakproof.
