Always wondered what the engine oil temp was running at until I changed the gauge from the red/green zone face to an actual numerical readout. Now I am concerned at seeing readout flirting with the 250 value on a warm day even after adding a finned aluminum suction cooler, also bringing oil capacity to 14 litres. This 930 is as 86 which is one year prior to the thermostat controlled fan that is in place on the fender coolers of 87's and up.These fans are activated at 244 degrees.Have purchased and will install an aftermarket fan this winter.Have also got my hands on another oil cooler that I can fit inside the left front fender which should up the oil capacity by about another 1.5 litres and should drop the oil temp considerably.I do not track the car.Question is,will I be dropping the oil temp will I be asking for another problem? What is a safe temp to run these engines at,is cooler better or not?Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Generally, you want to run about 220 degrees Farenheit to boil out the water. Colder will cause the sludge/wax build-up in the tank and the oil will be more viscous, more friction. Hotter than 240 is advised to stop driving and find whats wrong, 250 is alarm zone. Turbos will see higher oil temperatures due to higher horsepower but the real concern with Turbos is the coaking (sp?) of the oil in the SUPER HOT turbine housing bearing. The little particles of coak (sp?) can wreak havoc throughout your cam spray bars, rod bearings, etc.

Is your oil cooler thermostat in front of the right rear wheel opening to ship the oil forward to the cooler. The cooler lines should be very hot to the touch.

FWIW: i have many years experience in process controls and instrumentation. i am not
much good as a PORSCHE mechanic. what makes anyone accept vehicle instrument display values as "accurate"? i use deviation from normal as an indication that something is going on. personally, if i wanted to check oil temperature gage accuracy, i would put the sensing element in boiling water. water in a liquid state @ 1 bar A cannot rise above 212F. a reasonable accuracy check. accuracy of pressure instruments also varies. this stuff in automobiles is not high dollar. digital pyrometers are getting more affordable. just my thoughts. take, care,,,, jp |

Thank you all for your response, will drop the sending unit in boiling water before I do anything drastic.

Browzer52.......... I forgot to mention,,, when putting sensing element in the fluid
(boiling water for 212f), element must touch only liquid, any contact with container will make whole exercise useless. |
