2.8L RSR Timing
 

Dear Gentlemen ,
Last week my 2.8 RSR ish was brought back to life after 15 years http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat3.gif[img].
The Engine is built around a Correct 2.7 RS engine with Carrera 6 cams , Weber 46IDA's and Marelli Twin Spark . Now that the beast is up and running i would like to check the Ignition timing and also know the correct Dwell angle or points gap for this spec of Engine . Any Information can only make me happier then i am feeling right now .........

Is it something i have said http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/shake.gif[/img]. Surly someone can give me a few hints on the correct setup for this type of Engine . I have purchased the Bible " How to Rebuild & Modify Porsche 911 Engines" but in the back of the book i could not find any Tech info regarding the Timing on a 2.8 Engine .

There are several folks that might be helpful, we are in the week of our Thanksgiving holiday and things tend to slow down here until after Thursday. Wait a bit and try to bump it back up in a few days.

Ignition timing is 26-28 degrees at 6K.

I need to look up the dwell settings. Those are NOT easy to do without a distributor machine as the values are different for each set of points.

did you manage to find out the gap for the points .I am a little confused as i thought that all 4 points had the same gap value and that the second set are only a back up ? I love the learning curve :confused:

It seems dual points serve to increase the dwell angle, and also are overall more robust. The points are set up to open/close at two slightly different points. This site may be helpful:

You can increase dwell on a single point system by reducing the gap, but at some point that causes its own problems.

Doesn't tell you what the figure you want is, though.

i also found a web site with nice pictures and some information regarding Twin Spark Home but values and how to set the points correctly for a Marelli seem hard to find .I think they even have a picture of the Maschine Steve was on about which i have never seen in my life .
Last weekend i put a dwell meter on one side and measured a dwell of exactly 20 degrees ... reving the engine the dwell did not move at all which i guess means my distributor is in good health at least ... I will be at home again this weekend and measure the dwell on the other side to see if they are the same .
Again reading through a few posts some say the dwell is not so important with CDI but its nice to know how to set it on a more complicated distributor.
