930 Oil pump question

I just recieved a used 930 oil pump that I purchased on this board. When I have it on the bench with the drive shaft attached I cannot get the pump to make one revolution by hand. Seems to to be binding somewhere inside.
Question: Should you be able to rotate an oil pump by hand with smooth action over 360 degrees of rotation and more or does it require more than hand force?
Doesn't seem right to me.

Thanks for the input.

Dana

I was hesitant to take it apart because if I did, and found a problem, I would have diminished my recourse with the seller.

Sometimes, if these have been sitting for a while, they will be difficult to turn by hand. Try connecting the lay-shaft and intermediate shaft to the pump drive. Spray some WD-40 into the pump and use the large gear on the intermediate shaft as leverage to turn the pump by hand. This usually will break it loose and then you can check for nice smooth rotation.

Yep, fill 'er up with Marvel Mystery Oil, slip on a socket on the shaft and try to turn it with the additional leverage of a ratchet. Go easy.

That should un-gum it, as these pumps rarely, rarely fail, barring other catastrophic engine damage that gets steel shrapnel into it.

It should turn freely but remember, it turns CCW.

Disassembled it (per John) and cleaned it real well. Reassembled and oiled. Seems to be much better.
Now to tackle the #3 main bearing web for it to fit the 7R case.

Thanks to everyone.

Dana,

How hard was it to put back together? Any special tools required?

I'm thinking of jumping on that used pump on ebay and am curious about how to solve any potential problems.

Landon,

It is not difficult. I was hesitant only because if I found a problem, I might have had a harder time negotiating the return. Hopefully you won't have to go through that.

Good Luck
