a different head stud question

i'm starting my stock 2.4 e rebuild.
i had case savers installed by ollies.
i plan on reusing my steel studs, they cleaned up nicely.
when i test fit them they bottom out at 139 mm.
waynes book says set them at 135mm.
is 4mm a problem? any possible solutions?
i've considered running down a tap but read an earlier posting that said this resulted in wobbly studs.
i could also grind 4 mm off the end but am afraid this would mess up the threads.
thanks

Measure the depth of the holes the studs are going in and make sure they are really bottoming out. I suspect they are just getting tight before the bottom out. The problem of having them to high is that the studs will poke through the nuts and you won't be able to tighten the nuts without the wrench being forced out. If they are not actually bottoming out you can use a tap and only cut enough to get the studs in far enough. Just do a little at a time.

the holes are plenty deep.
it seems to be the bottom of the case saver that is too tight.
i don't want to force it.
can you use a tap in a case saver?

Get an open hex nut as opposed to the internal allan key head nut. Then you can run the nut down with out the tool popping out...

Cheers

Robmog,

DO NOT USE A STANDARD TAP!!!! I did and my studs, although useable, are loose in the threads. If it were me, I would thread a nut on the stud, grind off 4mm, chase the stud threads with a thread file and then remove the nut. When you take the nut off you will see whether or not you did a good job with the thread file. If the nut has any resistance when you take it off, screw it back on and clean up the threads with the file a little more until the nut comes off by hand.

A standard tap will take material out of you new inserts and make the hole bigger. There is a "chase" tap available but I don't think that's your problem. Taking 4mm from the embedded end of the stud is not going to effect the integrity of the stud.

The stud will tighten as it reaches the bottom of the case saver, just run it past that point and set them at 135
