rebuilding the3.2
Is it possible to rebuild a 3.2 engine in a way where it would not burn any oil between oil changes?

Normal consumption is 800 to 1000 miles per quart so you would drop 3 or 4 quarts between an oil change @3000miles. The cost of the engine is too high and too valuable to chance an oil related problem with oil @$2.50 a quart

I sure hope that's not true! (subscribed)
I'd like the experienced to chime in here. I'm going to be awful depressed if with all the work of my rebuild I burn as much oil as a 100K mile engine. Brand new valves, brand new guides, brand new pistons, rings and replated cylinders. If I burn more than a qt in between oil changes I will feel like a failure. Richard |

Richard,
Oil consumption can vary dramatically. I've owned 4 early 911s and most of them burned a quart in 1000-1500 miles. I did a top end overhaul on an 86 Carrera and my oil consumption went from a quart every 1000 miles to a quart every 2000 miles. I think this is about the best you can do with these engines. Much depends on the condtion of the valve guides, rings, and valve guide seals. You really want a bit of oil to get into the valve guides for long life. This is an air cooled engine and as such it runs much hotter (at the heads) than a water cooled engine. This results in differences in clearances that are larger than in a water cooled engines. -Andy

I never burned more than a qt every 1-1.5K before rebuild and I can say I'm at least the same or better afterward.

Greg,
A properly rebuilt 3.2 uses about a quart every 2-4K, depending how its driven. For the record, I'll say that the word "rebuilt" means many things to differerent people and as such, as no clear definition (except maybe to people in our industry). Carrera engines, if rebuilt to factory-new specs or better, uses VERY little oil provided that its broken-in correctly with the right oil. Naturally, YMMV,..... ![]() ![]()
