All this look nice but it's a waste of time for me....once you stick a /6 in a 914 you can't see anything anyways.

A great looking engine is the result in the pride in workmanship.

Quality is never a waste.

Henry, Are all those grey brand fan's new, or what do you prep with to get this finish?
Powder coating/and gold plating?

Different fans are conditioned as the project dictates.
Some fans a powder coated, Mercedes silver.
Aluminum fans are just bead blasted with Potter AD.
The concurs fans are bead blasted, dipped in caustic soda (makes it dark) then treated with a drying penetrating oil.

The gold is cold zinc plating.

Pride is one thing but I subscribe to the "Chrome don't get you home" philosophy.

Once you finish those and put the air cleaners on you still don't see much in the 914.
Driving down the road you don't see it at all and the chicks could care less how detailed your engine is. You can't even see the fan in a 914, that`s why you have the hole hacked into the firewall.

Nice looking engine...it wont last long without the surround rubbers.

The fan on my RSR is a standard 245 mm fan that was bead blasted and painted to have the original cosmoline coated look that came on the delivered cars of that era.

sc_rufctr 03-07-2010 05:41 AM

Thanks for the information. I thought it was fibreglass.

Art is hard the quantify. Chrome is not my style and neither is Erte' but Erte' is art never the less.

The "hacked" hole is a removable cover designed for ease of service. I.E. fan belt replacement and ignition timing.

The engine will remain clean as long as the owner is diligent about appropriate maintenance. Sort of like brushing your teeth.

I'm just bugging you Henry, my first flavour is still aircooled VW. I hate bling (and trailer queens) so much that all my personal engines are total plain Jane looking.
If you look at my sig you'll see that I put my details on the inside.

I'm almost 50 and I plan to drive the crap out of my cars, if they're buckets twenty years form now I probably won't give a rats butt....but I will have a smile on my face.

BTW I'm going to have to "hack" a hole in my firewall as well ;)

I've been behind a few 911's going down the road and I really couldn't tell you by looking at one if it had a sewing machine or a 3.8 in the back.

And even parked, still couldn't tell you. If you notice in all the photos above people have actually opened their engine covers to snap a photo. SmileWavy

Perhaps the art that counts is felt behind the wheel. Sewing machine or 3.8 is an easy call when pushing on the loud pedal.
What also happen from behind the wheel is a feeling of satisfaction for a job well done.
It's true that looking good does not mean running good but looking bad rarely represents a job well done.
If you're building an engine, you do the best you can. Some peoples best is better than others.

I have flaunted my engine on a few of these post before.... I will play again. Now it is actually just about ready run, as now I have my headers. Damn, these things can be expensive!!!! This was a 3.3 punched out to a 3.6, 8.0 to 1 C/R, full bay I/C, Pauter rods, etc.....

Hey TB930 - How long did it take to polish the halves! . . . And how did you go about doing it?

IIRC...about 160 to 180 hours!!! I was still saving up my money for the engine rebuild...and I just had to do something to pass the time. ( 8 years worth of time!)..... So, I bought is a few old beach towels, laid them out on the table, and strated polishing while watching racing, tv, etc...

I used Mothers AL polish ( in the red and white can), and about 1000 red cloth shop rags. Just used my hands, the polish, and the rags... thats all

antares 03-07-2010 07:16 PM

Outstanding job.

I have seen it were guys will clear coat the case halves after polishing since I would think the surface will eventually oxidize.
