hydraulic tensioners

Hello everyone,first time I've posted on here.I know there are loads of articles about tensioners but I really could do with some help.I have a 1976 2.7 targa which has just been upgraded to hydraulic tensioners complete with new ramps and chains.So far so good but after she warmed up there was still a rattle.Not at tickover or with revs on but on the die down of the engine.Any thoughts would be gratefully received.

I had annoying ticking, especially when the engine was hot.

Drove me nut's.

Dismantled the whole motor, And pin pointed the problem.

My rocker arm bushings were very worn, some more then others, and
I had severe pitting on two cam lobes.

I could, re-create the tic, myself, by hand, just by wobbling the shaft in the rocker arm.

Leakproof.

Can you pin pint the location of the tick to the chain housing? Left or right? If it is coming from the chain housing are you sure that the ramps are seated on the studs properly, did you prime your tensioners before they were installed and are you sure they sre getting good oil pressure?

If you remove the covers check to ensure that the oil relief valve (nipple on the tensioner) is intact, I had one come apart on installation. The aftermarket tensioners are not as hearty as the original.

Also you could check to ensure that the chain follows the groove of the guides, if not your ramps aren't aligned properly.

Get a stethoscope and have a friend rev the engine while you move around listening to different parts of the motor. Check the valve covers for sure. Use a mechanic's stethoscope, obviously, they help quite a bit.

Just to close this one,it was a faulty NEW hydraulic tensioner.Replaced it and everything is now ok.Thanks to all for the help.

Good to know you found it. Were you able to diagnose and repair while the engine was in the car?

Boy, sure hearing this story a lot lately. Brand new pressure tensioners that don't work. I guess I got lucky with mine.

All the more reason to put some safety collars inside the cylinders to avoid a full collapse.

I did the safety collars on the pressure fed tensioners after having a new one fail. Was very easy to do and would recommend it.
