Just split the case, is this a problem?
Not sure what happened here, but is this of big concern, should I have it welded up?
Main bearings and crank journals look good, should I still do the rod bearings since I'm in this far? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

about that hole.. I have no clue how it could've happened.
I was looking at the pics of my teardown but that particular area is not in any of my pics.... I can have a look at my case tomorrow, it's not reassembled yet. There are some good engine rebuilders on this forum, they'll chime in, I'm sure I don't know if it is an absolute must to do the rod bearings as well, but I would do them just for good measure even if it was not necessary. Definitely if you plan to do some HP increasing upgrades. If you do, replace the rod bolts as well.

Thanks.
From the looks of it, it appears that a tube was installed down the bottom of the thermostat hole, and that is where it broke thru the casing. I pluged the thermostat hole and blew compressed air through the oil pump end and filled the area with the break out with oil to see if I got any bubbles from it leaking, but it appears to be tight. I have a great aluminum welder friend that can weld it up just in case. PS the black in the hole is the actual tube, the pic makes it look like it is broken open into the oil gallery.

If you want, you can seal it with Permatex Hysol epoxy. As for bearings: replace mains, rods bearings ( bolts and nuts) and intermediate bearings. Anything less is half assssed.

Thanks Henry. I refuse to do anything half assed, It's Full assed or nothing!
I'm very familiar with VW engines (I'm in the VW restoration parts Biz) I have a Turbo charged fuel injected 71 VW Convertible, but this is my first Porsche engine rebuild attempt, I bought this engine just to learn on, and like you said, I don't want to do anything half assed. I've been reading Wayne's book every night before bedtime!

I had a hole in the exact same location. Mine wasn't as big, but I think would have been had I not done a rebuild. I used JB Weld over my hole.

That seems rather presumptuous not to mention judgmental.
Perhaps she's the reason I have time and incentive to give advice.

Rat rod? I fully expect to see one of those on a Friday night Cruising Grand in Escondido sometime in the near future.

Don't worry about that hole inside the case. It's normal like Henry said. I wouldn't put epoxy there either, it could break loose and cause problems. There is an equivalent hole on the outside of the case behind the oil cooler. This one you should fill with epoxy to prevent leaks. If the one inside the case leaks it won't matter.
