rod bearings
I've been preparing to build up my low mile (70000) turbo 3.0 and have found that it's in good shape upon eye inspection. The P/Cs are cleaned up and found to be great. My crank has the rods still installed. So the bearings are still in there, but should I remove them and replace the rod bearings or leave it alone? I intend to replace all other bearings as well as rings and all gaskets and seals. Reason for rebuild is that two studs were broken. TIA

You have 24 studs to replace on the turbo. I used 993 dilivars on mine but that was when they were the same price as the old dilivars.
If youre doing the top end including rings I believe that too much new stuff on the top end hinders the quality of the used bottom end. If youre just doing the valve job and studs, open the case, change the rails and intermediate shaft bearings, reseal and close up til next time. With a turbo the maintenance is higher than NA engines. Bruce |

Yeah, it's split and will get new bearings. The crank isn't apart yet though. Should I remove the rods and replace the bearings there I. Your opin?

If it were me then yes if you have the case split then all new main, rod and intermediate shaft bearings. Doe not pay to a half job now that your in there.

My experience has been that the rod bearings wear faster than the mains do. So it doesn't make sense to have the crank out and not replace the rod bearings.
Of course, this means new rod bolts. I'd purchase the stronger aftermarket bolts which you torque with a stretch gauge. The measurements you took will allow you, next time, to determine if the bolts can be reused (if their free length only increased a tad, and within the manufacturer's spec, they can be reused). Plus they are just plain stronger. |

Thanks Walt, that's real good info. I'll replace as I want a great rebuild not a cheap runner.
