Oil Pump Upgrade?

Good morning to all. I have realized that I forgot to consider an oil pump upgrade during my engine re-build. I am building a 2.380 L (nickies / JE 9.5:1) on a 1970 2.2 case. I will install an exterior oil cooler, probably in the front. What is the pump that I should use? Is the 2.7 pump the right one? Can I find a used pump or is it cheap insurance to spend the $1,000 for a new pump, install kit, and new sump cover? My old pump appears to be OK - no obvious problems, spins smooth, looks good.

Thanks. Engine case now at Ollie's, so still time to update the case. I am having the oil bypass mod done.

Rick

Rick,

I would be using a Carrera pump (or a real nice used SC one) and the appropriate sump plate to match.

Those hold better hot oil pressure than the magnesium pumps.

Don't forget to do the oil bypass modification.

If you don't do the bypass mod and you use a newer pump, your case will not scavenge as well. You may have a problem with the case filling up with oil and the tank running dry. The later pump has an increased pressure section at the expense of a decreased scavenge section. A case without the mod dumps the pressure relief oil into the bottom of the case where it must be pumped back out by the scavenge pump.

Low oil pressure, too.

Flieger is right that the later oil pump will give higher oil pressure, however the oil bypass mod doesn't change the oil pressure (unless the tank goes dry.

I think I might have misread the question. I was thinking that if you did the oil bypass mod but used the early pressure spring, you would have low oil pressure. I guess the later spring would be part of the mod.
