911 Newbie, looking for answers
I am looking at a 1974 911 2.7 to use as a driver, the body is rust free but I have some questions about the engine and it's modifications. Paperwork indicates it was rebuilt 10k miles ago, and just recently webers were installed. I have been looking for pictures to use as a guide, but have not had much luck. My concerns are with the way the MSD was installed, both technique (neatness etc...) and location. Since I'm pretty much flying blind here, I though those with more experience might be able to look at this picture and tell me right off it this was a disaster installation by someone who didn't know what they were doing, or one of many options for placement of the MSD.
The car is owned by my uncle, he found it in a neighbor's garage 6 months ago awaiting the installation of the carbs, bought it and had the carb installation done. He's been driving it the last 6 months (1,000 miles or so) and pronounced it a stout driver. He's had his fun and is now selling. I'm interested in buying but have no real knowledge of the 911 other than what I have read on the forums the last week....anything it that engine bay jump out to anyone as a real problem? ![]() |

It seems an odd way to mount the MSD. Why don't you seek out a Porsche Professional in your area and have pay them for their opinion. It would be $ well spent.

Is the engine rebuild documented? Who did it? There are certain things that a non-Porsche shop might not be aware of...

Car is over 5 hours away, taking the condition of it at face value. Uncle says everything looks on the up & up so I'm trusting his judgement...that being said, I though the installation looked a bit wonky and this is his first 911.
I will be calling him though and seeing if he can pull the reciepts on the engine rebuild so I can get some more information on the shop that did the work. |

OK, there's alot of unknowns with any used car, what are you paying for this car? I'd still have a Porsche Pro inspect it. "everything looks on the up & up".........?? That is scary.

Low 'teens....10k on engine & trans re-build. Body perfect no rust, shiny paint. Interior, good. Newly recovered front seats, Uncle says carpet could use refresh if looking to make it really, really nice.
Uncle is a car guy, just new to the 911, he's done loads of research on the internet for the last couple of years so I trust his judgment on the lack of rust, and the fact that the car drives terrific. Just a bit wary of the engine mods...I'm a bit of a car guy as well, again just new to the 911. Drove VW Bugs for years as a daily driver, doing most of my own work along with a recently sold '91 300zx. 911 is on my "bucket list" and this one kind of came across my radar so I'm pursuing it with interest. Some more pics, always looking for more opinions.... ![]() ![]() Last edited by Driver_X; 09-09-2010 at 05:40 PM.. |

Well, I like it. If you can find out what shop did the engine work and do a bit of "Introweb" research on their reputation. Good luck.
