Keep Pistons and Cylinders Togther

I know this has been asked. But I'm going to ask again. I'm pretty sure I have alusils. I can't find the KS but I see 10 fins and the piston skirt looks like they are. Plus the cylinders are not magnetic.

So do I keep them together or take them apart and measure.

Cars has 205,000 miles. Compression came out well across all cylinders. I'm not sure about burning oil because the engine leaked pretty good which was the reason for removal. I don't want to cause a problem that isn't there by separating them.

Thoughts.

Well according to Waynes book alusils are one use only . I think there is likely hood of breaking rings if you replace them . There are people in various camps about this but since my performance was good and I had vey little oil consumption I left it all together and put it back all together. My personal choice.

Keep the pistons inside the cylinders if you plan on re-using the set of Alusils.

That way you do not disturb the rings.

Engine rebuild..........

Matt(arbital),

Are you planning to re-use the old piston rings with 205-K miles? Why? I don't know a good reason why you should re-use them specially with the high mileage. This is your engine and you could do what you want but think twice. In case of doubt, contact John W. or Bruce A. and seek their opinion. These guys have done hundreds of engines while I just over a dozen. Keep us posted.

Tony

I ended up separating Pistons and cylinders so I can check and measure everything.

Matt,

Are you planning to re-use the 205-K miles old piston rings? This was the question people been asking you before and have not seen any response. Thanks.

i re-ringed mine about 9 years ago with Alusil. No problems to date after 35,000 miles.

Matt... This is a late comment given where you are but will say anyway. Before pulling heads, a leak down test of the cylinders can tell in advance where issues---if any---are in the cylinders. Worn rings / out of round cylinders can be heard hissing at the breather. Intake valves leaking can be heard at the intake manifold. Leaking exhaust valves at the exhaust pipe. Is nice info to have before diving in as it offers some insight to where a build is potentially headed.

I'm going to measure and see what happens. If the rings are worn I think I will go ahead and re-ring. John Walker gave me the correct part number for the Alusil rings. He said he does it.

I did not have a leak down test but I did do a compression test. All were close to 141 psi.
