By Passing CDI

I am about to install my 2.7 into my 912 and realized I that I don't have a CDI. Will the engine have any problems by passing the CDI?

2.7 E cam with Webers.

Thanks.

I have run my 2.2L t engine for ten years with points and condenser and a stock VW blue coil. Never had a problem. I have Weber's and the engine runs great. I do have to replace the points every three years or so. Its mostly a daily driver putting six to ten thousand miles a year.

In the "old days" when we had leaded gasoline, the lead deposits on the plugs made them harder to fire. In those days, I had a '66 911 that easily would foul its plugs every 3 or 4K miles. I installed a homemade CDI and seldom changed plugs after that. But, I would guess that with todays no-lead fuel you can probably get by with running a conventional ignition. As an example, my '66 912 has an aftermarket electronic ignition which is "pointless" (but not capacitive-discharge) and it never misses or fouls plugs. I plan to install a 70 911T 2.2L in the months to come and I will first try it without CDI as it seems to run on the engine stand just fine without it.
