Oil pressure relief spring
Do you need to split the case in-order to access the oil pressure relief spring?
I am rebuilding the top end of my 3.2l and thought it would be good to update the oil pressure relief spring while I'm at it. |

One is accessible on the bottom and the other is on the outside of the case behind the exhaust heat box. Should be easy access with the heads off. On a Carrera its a 15mm box wrench the easiest way to get the cap off, but you might need a magnet to get the plunger out.

What updated pressure relief spring are you referring to? The earlier engines required a different spring when an oil pressure bypass modfication was done. However your later 1987 engine already has this modification done to it.

No modification, just replacing the original with another OE. If the spring and piston are accessible while the engine is out for the top end build it seems like good insurance after 23 years.

Both springs are easily reached from underneath with the engine in the car.You will lose a couple ounces of oil.
