machine shops for head and rod rebuild for my 79 930 turbo
Well I am in search of highly qualofied shops to do the rebuild on my cylinder heads and con rods for my 79 930.
Live in Baltimore MD area and wanted opinions from the forum on who does really good work at reasonable price for a rebuild of my cylinder heads (competition valve job and guide replacement) and possibly the rods (rebush) and the rocker arms (rebush and grind rocker pad). Also looking for the best place to send my stock cams out to be converted to 911SC specs. Was told Dougherty is good but was not sure if grinding the stock cam to the new profile was as good as Web cams that hard welds and regrinds the new profile. Plus and minusses of each approach? I was looking at EBS racing and Ollies but wanted opinions from the guys here that have had work done by these or other shops. Word of mouth is golden in my opinion. Better than fancy adds from Pano or Excellence magazine. Thanks, Fred

Near perfect SC cams are common used for less than a regrind. Last edited by lindy 911; 12-11-2010 at 09:45 AM.. |

Ben at M&K used Henry at Supertech and he told me that he was very happy with the quality and turnaround time.
As for your cams, factory cams are chilled iron so grinding on them won't soften them. Welding is a different matter, however. It's difficult to get good results when welding on cast iron due to the really high carbon content. You may feel better with using new cams, all things considered.

For heads Anchor Atlantic is on your side of the country. Lots of people have used them and have great things to say about them.
Send your rocker arms to Craig Garrett (cgarr) and he'll reface them and rebush them with newer technology teflon-lined bushings. He's done some testing on these and they've proven to perform much better than the original bare metal bushings. I agree with Lindy that you could just use a good set of SC or Carrera cams instead of reprofiling yours. Remember to find a set that has the same fastening (large 46mm nut?) of your cams. Later cams use a bolted end.

Cylinder Head Shop
I just got a set of heads back from Xtreme Cylinder Heads (Bill DiCondina) in Florida. They are absolutely spectacular. Phone number is 772 286 1660.

I used a set of newer GE60 cams with power steering pump mount and bolt style sprocket set up. I cut the PS end off in a band saw and my '78 SC cam accessories mounted right up with the bolts and washers that came with the cams. They work just fine. Lindy |
