intermediate shaft gear ?
i got a std/std replacement crankshaft for my 2.4 rebuild.
my original intermediate shaft gear is type 1. how can i tell if the intermediate drive gear on the new crank is also type 1? i know i can just transplant my original, but is that necessary? thanks

It seems to me that it was stamped into the face on the gear. Also just because you have a 1 on the intermediate shaft gear doesn't mean you should have a 1 on the crank gear. I don't have my books in front of me so this is from memory. The crankcase is marked with a 1 or 0. There are allowable combinations of 1 and 0 gears to go with each crankcase. In general a 1 crankcase should have 1 gears and a 0 crankcase should have 0 gears. There are allowed mixes of the gears but I don't recall them.

The intermediate shaft stamp on the gear has to match the stamping on the case next to the crank pully.
There is a list in the manual of the fit, dont fit for the im shaft Bruce |

agreed, but i just noticed there are 2 different part #'s
for the crank drive gear labeled 0 and 1. i now assume this must also be matched, but i can't see a number on mine.

i have the answer, thanks to george at ollie's!
andy had it right. cases are either # 0 or 1 it is preferable to match your IS gear # to the case any combination of crank gear # and IS gear # is allowed except.... you cannot put 1+1 in a 0 case you cannot put 0+0 in a 1 case thanks for the replies

Bob
The key is getting the right amount of backlash. As these gears wear, the dimensions do change and it is not unusual to get the correct amount of backlash with a set of mis-matched gears. I'd do a trial assembly with the gear you have installed on the crank and check the backlash before changing out your crank gear.

Good information even if it's almost 2 years old.
