Is this engine a 75 or 76???

Hi,

I just bought a rough mid year coupe with pulled head studs. I was told it was a 76 but checking the vin it is a 74. The engine has been replaced at some stage but I have done my research and I have conflicting numbers. The engine type is a 911/41 which by Wayne's book shows it to be a 75 engine, but the engine number is 6160048 which I gather should be a 76 number?? Anyone have some clarification on this?

Thanks.

You are correct, 911/41 was used in 75, and the third digit ''6'' in 6160048 mean this is a 76 serial number.
The only explanation I see is since you have an early serial number (0048), maybe the factory still have some unused blocks printed with 911/41 at the end of the '75 production, and decided to use them for the first production of '76 cars.

This is still very mysterious...

That is kind of what I am thinking, but like you said it seems odd. If anyone else has some further insight into this it would be good to know.

type & serial # is correct for a 911 engine in Japan in 1976
