Timing chain removal question
Is it possible to remove the timing chain from the camshaft sprocket just by compressing the chain adjuster? Is there then enough free play? I don't have the tools to hold the camshaft and remove the sprocket so I was wondering if it's possible to only remove the chain and then remove the complete camshaft housing.
The idea is to do as much disassembling as I can on my own and then to bring my engine to a friends shop who is going to rebuild it for me. |

I dont think it works like that. The cam goes into the tower, then the chain housing goes on. Then the plate that seals it all is bolted on, then the gear is installed. If the cam is installed you wont be able to get to all the bolts in the tower that hold it to the heads, and if the gear is on you wont be able to get the chain housing off easily. also, this is much easier to dissemble with it all together due to some of the torque values involved. I dont think you can remove the chain easily by just letting off the tension. I could be incorrect on that... Ill let the experts weigh in but i dont think this would be advised...
Can your friend loan you the tool. Its critical to disassemble this right so you dont damage anything.

You don't have to hold the cam/sprocket if you use an impact gun - spins the bolt right out with ease and the sprocket/cam does not move at all . . .
