Collecting parts for a 3.0 build...
I've enjoyed my SC for 2 years now, but I am starting to consider a rebuild ('82 SC, 160k+ miles).
To avoid a $15k shock I plan on driving my SC for a few more years while I collect parts. A few thousand spent here and there versus a $15k all at once hit may help the marriage! I just want a bit more push while I'm at the rebuild stage, no track time expected. Engine build searches on the forum helped shape my anticipated build (short stroke 3.0). The basic plan was: Mahle 98mm 9:8:1 P&C (I have KS P&C's now) early 3.0 heads & early CIS injection ('78/'79) to match 964 cams retain CIS and single plug heads, use high octane pump gas I already have SSI's & an M&K 2in/1out I was planning a "Max Moritz" short stroke for my tired '82 SC, but I just got off the phone with Andial and it seems a set of 98mm 9:8:1 P&C's now runs almost $5k. Are JE P&C's the way to go to save some money? Will they long enough to make sense in a rebuild, or should I just save up for the Mahle P&C's? I checked Pelican and they only have euro 95mm 9:8:1 P&C's, probably a few H.P. there, but I'd probably spend the extra $1k for the 98mm ones which should bump it (?) 15 H.P. or so. Any comments on a 3.0 build and/or "parts gathering" would be appreciated Thanks, Mark Last edited by G450X; 02-11-2011 at 04:02 PM.. |

Talk to Steve W, Don at EBS and Henry at Supertec. You will gain some perspective. I went with 3.2 bored and replated 98 mm Mahle and JE's. Some old school guys will sell you on Mahle only. Some newer school guys will sell you on replated 3.2 Mahle and JE's and will claim they are just as good. think if you are like most of us and drive less than 8k a year the JE's will be more than adequate. If you drive 20k a year and want to drive 150k over the next 7 years mahle are probably for you. the old school guys like Steve will be comparing this to OEM / Stock... which may be great if you are looking for 200k miles. but ill own my car till i retire in 20 years and wont hit 100k miles and JE's are easily good for 100k miles... so its a cost vs benefit and what you are looking for... 2200 vs 5000. 20 years is pretty damn good for 2200... if you use EBS and buy Cylinders plated by Millenium they carry a lifetime warranty. US Crome does not carry this warranty and costs more. do your research. Another factor is Cam choice. Talk to John Dougherty and Jerry Woods and choose a cam. you dont want your cam choice to be limited by your piston choice. Another reason i went with JE's is that camgrinder sold me on GT2-108 cams. The Mahle would have needed to be modified to use this cam. You need to talk to the experts before you start collecting parts... just my .02. perhaps the experts will weigh in.

Another 3.0 rebuild
I am also planning a rebuild. Only I am going to do a 3.3 liter short stroke engine. With the 100mm pistons, cylinders, a reconditioned set of Carrera twin plug heads, XDi direct fire ignition and used 964 cams, I am expecting to have right at $10k in the engine. Like you, I am going to keep the CSI injection, at least for the time being. If you look around, you will be able to find the bits and pieces that you need, just not all in one place. I have been collecting parts for my engine for over a year. At this point, all I need to buy are the common parts, chains, ramps, bearings, gaskets, etc. Once I get the engine disassembled and the crank measured, I will place the order for the remaining parts. At that point, the rebuild should go fairly quickly since the long lead items are already in hand. Good luck with your engine project!

Thanks for the input....
I'll discuss it with some pro builders before I collect parts to prevent a mismatched set-up.
I'd guess I'd place dependability 1st - if I get into it and spend that much coin, I'd like to see at least 10-12 years of use before I have to tackle it again! Unless my old 3.0 gives up on me (I am into more than a quart per 1k miles with some smokey decel blow by after a 5k or so run up in 2nd gear), I should have a few years to collect parts before a build. I may get lucky and find some good used pieces as well.... |

I have a complete CIS off my car for a 78 complete and freshly reconditioned. O' rings replaced rubber boots, etc. Pretty much everything except for the fuel injector lines.
Not looking to get rich, just want to get it to someone who can use it. PM me if interested. Shane
