Henry,

What butterflies are you using with the 40mm intake ports? I guess 42mm?

Cheers,
Chris

Don, darn nice project! And that motor? Fuggetaboutit! I know some early 911 hotrod nuts in the Midwest that would love to see that car run. Were in IN are you located? (generally is OK - NW, SE, South Central...).

That a 74 Carrera or modified to those specs? Typically not a targa fan, but that is one *****in' looking ride. Nice!

The throttle bodies are 41.5mm x 39. I like to have a slight transition (small to large) between throttle bodies and intake port.

Hi Scott, thanks for the comments....I'm originally from Chicago now in the South Bend area. Whenever it's not conflicting with the kid's baseball games I'll be at an autocross at the Tire Rack - lot of Chicago content there. Then I try to hit Gingerman twice a month usually weekdays just for practice.

Car is a '74 modified to look like a Carrera....though just like the new engine most of the mechanical spec is whatever the hell I think I'll like rather than attempting to faithfully reproduce something specific.

Hi Don,

My good friend, Scott, sent me a link to this thread.

What a cool motor! Great job Henry.:)

Kudos to you for going this route over just putting a 3L engine for the extra HP. Can't wait to see and hear it this summer.

Who will you use to tune it? If you're interested I can send you the contact info of the mechanic that both Scott use for our cars. He has tuned several engines Henry has built for customers from the Midwest . He even has access to a chassis dyno for really dialing the engine in.

Hi Don
Although the location for the MSD box looks convenient, I would recommend that it be mounted outside the engine compartment. (we mount then under the drivers seat)
The box hates RF signals and the solid core wires and twin plug system generate a huge RF field.
The other reason for mounting the box outside the engine compartment is heat. Electrical equipment function best when they are kept cool.

The reason I posted this instead of simply emailing you is that I thought others may benefit from this information.

fryardds: If you're talking about Larry Marzano, I highly recommend him.

Ducman 03-14-2011 11:36 AM

Yeh...I probably will move the MSD box as I'm not exactly happy with how it crowds the engine bay

Hi Henry,

Yes, Larry is our mechanic. He is truly amazing.:)

I'm pretty sure he tuned a 2.8L SS MFI engine you built for a mutual customer from WI. That motor really rocks.

It's alive!

Started and ran for first time this morning. No problems so far.

Time to drain oil and inspect.

Stunning engine.

Six years ago I mounted the MSD under my driver's seat and never read of any one else that did it. Put the coil where the CD box was. Now I feel better.

You do!

Finally got the thing out on the road to start putting some break in miles on it. Sounds great even though I'm keeping rpm down during first few hundred miles. Wife and neighbors claim it is much loader than previous 2.7 rs spec motor....ever though same M&K muffler.

It's definitely a strong motor...I was a little worried about the power characteristics-that it would be too peaky and not enough grunt at low rpm. But it is better than previous 2.7 with S cam in low rpm and sure it will blow it away in the upper range. Perfect for a light car.

I will see what I can do to get some audio.

Short stroke, huge cams, low compression, oversized intake and MFI is hardly the formula for derivability on paper but on the road these little engines always amaze the driver.

An excerpt from Excellence " Short stroke shoot-out". Buy the magazine to read the whole article, it has all the Porsche stuff fit to print. :)

And that article was written by our own Cornpanzer! Dave Conklin

fryardds 03-30-2011 06:04 PM

Hi Don,

Congratulations.:) Glad to hear you getting some easy miles on it now. Can't wait to see and hear it this summer.

Reading this article that Dave wrote brings back great memories of our last cross country trip back in '08 when we all drove our early 911s out to CA. The three cars, discussed in the article, with SS motors were driven by their owners on the drive. I would love to build a 2.5L SS motor to go in Patrick.

Ducman 03-31-2011 06:34 AM

Hey Brian - speaking of cross country and California....you planning to do Rennsport? I'm contemplating a driving trip or a ship the car out and meet up with it.

anderson111 04-01-2011 01:14 AM

That was really an amazing which you have shown.....

Henry,
I always look forward to your posts. Another great blend of technical expertize, master craftsmanship and art. Your attention to detail and aesthetics put your engines several notches above almost everybody else. You set the bar very high.

regards,
al

PS: Don................wow, nice Targa. Peru Red? I personally think that the Targa is overlooked, but the more people see how well they can be done...........I have a 77S Targa, Peru Red, that I was just going to post for sale, but after seeing yours..............

Thanks, that is always be appreciated.
We are the "starving artist" of the Porsche world. Sometimes I wish we could just knock them out in mass quantities. You know, the $3,900 911 overhaul. SmileWavy

Yes Peru Red. In my opinion Targa's are not as tolerant of color and execution as coupes. a well done targa in the right color looks nearly as good as a well done coupe. But somehow the wrong color combo, stance, condition etc has a more adverse effect on the targa?? The coupe looks pretty good no matter how horrid the execution. Kinda like some girls....they look good in anything:o:o:D
