It should be a type 911 transmission. It's a magnesium 901 with a different
clutch mechanism to take a 225mm clutch.

Generally speaking – yes.

The differential is the most significant.
The 901 differential started with the 904 and the earliest 911s. It was properly sized for a 2-liter but no margin of safety.

The differential in the type 911 transmission is the same as the 915 and 930. The ZF LSD that is used in the type 911 uses 917 lamina. Needless to say, this is a very robust differential compared to the 901.

Almost everything in the type 911 is the same as the type 901 with a few small exceptions. The 1st gear is widened by 0.6 mm and 2nd gear by 0.8 mm.

Both the later 901s and almost all 911s suffer from the ‘simplified differential’. This is the method of retaining the differential gear shaft. This is an easy update using 914 or 915 parts.

The ’67 and earlier type 901 had a ‘non-reinforced’ input shaft with smaller 12 mm threads. In ’68 the input shaft threads were ‘reinforced’ to 14 mm. The type 911 has the reinforced version.

A type 911 has the clutch pivot located for the 225 mm, pull-type clutch. The cast boss for the pivot is designed where it can be machined to accept the pivot for the 901 215 mm push-type clutch. There is not provision on a type 901 casting to convert it to the later 225 mm clutch.

There are two versions (undocumented) of the type 911 main casting. You can identify the difference by the location of the transmission number and the type number. The later (‘reinforced’) case has a rectangular boss cast below the differential for the numbers. The earlier version has the numbers stamped on the rib.

There is always discussion about if the aluminum 901 is stronger casting than the type 911 magnesium castings. My experience is yes, the magnesium casting is just as strong as the earlier 901. The advantage it is lighter weight.

If you are using a type 911 at the limit of its capacity, there are a few aftermarket improvements. Both the intermediate plate and differential side cover are available as stronger aluminum replacements. You can install thread inserts in the casting. For serious racing an electric oil pump, filter and cooler are necessary and will extend the life of the parts.

Most agree that a 2.8 is about as large an engine for a type 911. There are a number surviving 3.0 and larger.

I have a type 911 in my 914-6 street hotrod 2.8S and in my 914-6 SCCA GT2 racer.
These have been surviving just fine since the ‘70s.

Best,
Grady
