I dragged it home...
Its been unloved for most of a year, 4 different dealers owned it, no one would cough the money to buy it because it rapped under load. I looked at it and wasnt interested last Saturday, told that to the salesman. Also told him the engine needed work and I could do it for him if he wanted it fixed but I wouldnt pay $xxx amount of dollars for it. The owner called me and said he could do it for the offer so Friday I m the owner of an engine wrapped in an 85 Targa that needs detailing. 106,900 miles, shifts sweet.

Very nice Bruce

What are your plans for it?
|
Open the engine and tighten things up, reseal so I know what is there..Its always a pig in a poke when you buy something this old. Once I know what s there then I know what I have.
There is a lot of detail work but it ll get done. Bruce |
Hauling it to a its new home......
Bruce,
Did you drive the trailer with targa on it with just a single came-along hooked up? Or there were other straps at the other side? That targa will soon have a smooth running engine in a couple of months. BTW, thanks for the advises you have given me for my current engine rebuild project. Tony |
Tony
I know a guy who used to drive his car up onto his open trailer, set the handbrake, pull in the ramps, and drive off. Never had a problem. Not my cup of tea, but the less you have to do to get a car secured for trailering, the less there is to forget to do. When trailering I sometimes wish it still had a handbrake. Walt |
Heavy chains on the front, set the e brake and in low gear, comealong in the back to tighten everything down.

I'm confused... you counter offered at the dealership and the dealership owner called you to accept the offer? or was this a consignment shop and the car's owner called? or they accepted your offer to fix it?
Regardless, nice car... even though it is a targa ;) |
the owner called because I offered to fix the engine and he realized that with the engine fixed he was still going to loose money so he accepted my offer even though it cost him money. He realized he was going to loose money either now or later.

Well, the shop is holding me up on the customer engine, right now I seem to have more heads to rebuild than the shop can get out, never say anything, they have their job to do.
Have the Carrera to work on, it didnt pay to do a compression check, I could hear the heads falling off when I drove it. Wednesday morning and early afternoon I got the engine and trans down on the floor. I have to work tomorrow so I wont split it right away, I have only one engine stand left and with it I cant lead out the engine far enough to clear the heat boxes. The heads are in the shop for the valve job, the pistons and cyls are Mahle nikisil, all the bearings were stock original, the bottom had never been opened, the intermediates showed the wear.. The studs were not broken, just #1 cylinder head was loose, how I dont know.
Took the case in for cleaning along with the cam carriers. Today, I pulled the loose, put in upside down, engine mat..wasnt even glues. Hope the sun in the black truck liner will smooth it out. Down to the quarter car wash to spray the engine bay out while waiting for the engine parts to return. Pictures are after it dried from the car wash. Shop called and said the job is done, I can pick it up.
6 valve jobs, case cleaning and cam carriers cleaned. I had time to assemble the heads and the cam carriers and take a couple pictures. Tomorrow I ll get the cams in first thing in the morning, then the rest of the case parts will be in. Will be back running before you know it. Good score. Looks like a pretty clean car (gotta love what a pressure washer does for you) and nothing really major to fix. Also see its got the later CV axles with the M10 bolts. Nice.

Will you be replacing the lower Dilivar studs with steel? I had been told that the later, coated Dilivars were resistant to corrosion induced fractures. However, last week I tore down a 3.2 with (2) broken coated lower Dilivar studs. I have never seen a broken steel stud. |
Tom, As a rule when I open these engines, even the Carreras and pull the dilivars. Years ago I would build a 3.0 and the next morning I would have broken pieces on the floor. Only need this problem onec or twice and you dont fool with it any more.
Update note, I have 2 3.0 that I bought and they have the 993 dilivars, one has 24 and the other has 12. I ve read so much good stuff about them I m going to retorque on them. 3.0 only needs 25ft# so they should survive. Bruce |
Well, for a Friday, I had a busy day in the garage. Got my hands on the intermediate shaft bearings and home for lunch. Started with the case opened, got the shaft bearings installed and the halves put together.
Torqued the case and put the P&C s togetherhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304738563.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304738638.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304738701.jpg Then 11pm is rolling up and its time to call it a night http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304738855.jpg Every body have a good night Bruce |
Well, it was a decent morning for working on the engine. I was down to doing the cams for starters. I had to measure the chain depth and follow the Carrera numerics for resolving the depth of the gears.
Locked everything up and set the pins. The spec is 1.1 to 1.4 with 1.25 being target. I always build to the high number and came in at 1.36 and 1.38 but the 1.38 didn't come in until I rotated the gear one link.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304814109.jpg I got tired of walking around the exhaust.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304814196.jpg I checked the cam oil lines to make sure all 9 were squirting freely. I use either WD40 or Mystery oil, squirt can and air pressure. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1304814364.jpg Bruce |
I dont have all the pieces yet, doing the fuel line on the injection and the fan band cant be made pretty so I ll look for a nice one. I ruined the cross over pipe trying to get the rusted bolts out of it. Its almost ready to go on the table and get the flywheel on. Maybe this evening.
