Motor Rebuild Definition
Hey Guy's,
I friend and I are having a difference of opinion on the definition of a motor rebuild. I want to hear from you! What constitutes a motor rebuild in your opinion? If you were buying a rebuilt motor what would you expect? All opinions appreciated. Dean |

While a standard definition would be nice, it is up to the salesman and how he uses the words. A good salesman will stretch the truth and call it how he will.
Make your own definition and insist on seeing the records. Try using words like "split the case", "refinish the crank", "regrind the cams", "replace the cylinders with new" for searching out a true major overhaul. 911 Engines needing a rebuild or overhaul vary but a rule I use is: Over 100K miles - do the top end. Unless there is a reason the low end should be ok if oil was changed regularly. Over 150K miles - split the case and do it all. FWIW ![]()

+1 Oldtree, I think it all comes down to case splitting or not.
If it were me I wouldn't call it a rebuild w/o splitting the cases in order to check all tolerances and replacing mains brgs, rod brg, rod bolts & head bolts. However, it's all relative and that's just my 2 cents, RC

Just beware of the old "2 tool" rebuild (steam cleaner..and spray can).
I have seen many bargains turn out to be like this. I even saw one that was cleaned and sprayed...but the old black oil was still in it...along with the old filter (which had been wiped clean). There are people out there that will cheat you if you let them. MM comes to mind....LOL Bob

I would expect to see the actual invoice including a list of all the parts that were replaced, the work that was actually performed, the number of miles since the rebuild, compression and leakdown numbers, and the name and contact information of the shop that did the work.
