Engine Reseal/2.2

Hello All,
I have a 2.2 in my 914/6 and have to pull the motor to change the alternator, and address some oil leaks.I had the engine out over the winter and thought I had done my due diligence to address the leaks but apparently not.
Some background:
The motor is a replacement for the original, which was worked on by the local dealer, then suffered some sort of catastrophic failure. The owner then used a respected local shop to source a motor on a T case with the dealer footing the bill.I bought the car and was told the motor was a T spec, but it always ran really strong, not like a T.
When I had the engine out.I took number 1 head off and looked at the piston and it is not a T piston.(possibly an S piston)The cam has an E part number on it,but I realize that does not mean much.(coulda been reground).

So I put the motor in and it fired up,ran great but leaked from the front, somewhere under the fan and both sides under the chain covers. If you looked under the car it is almost a triangle. The case has oil on it on the 1,2,3 side in between the oil return tubes. It is 3 distinct trails from top to bottom
While the motor was out,I changed the pressure fed tensioner lines, and put new gaskets and seals on everything I could think of with the exception of rsr seals on the rocker shafts.
So the plan is to pull the motor, change the alternator, fix leaks, put it in and drive.
Should I change to an externally regulated alt?
What other things should I look at as a source for leaks?
I have ordered intermediate shaft seal, rsr seals, cam chain cover seals, oil pressure, oil switch oil breather gaskets and seals.
okay brain trust,what am I missing,what should I do,don't do etc.
A huge thank you in advance to the BEST Porsche community in the world!

John
ps,I will post pictures of the pistons tomorrow

You could look in Waynes 101 projects or engine rebuild books to make sure you don't miss anything.

Thanks Alfonso,
Got the book,will follow it.
How about the alternator?
Would you change it or keep it externally regulated?
Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Not sure about the alternator...which might be more advantageous in terms of reliability or service-ability or even if it's a PITA to change styles.

Bump to get some one to chime in maybe..

Good luck

We usually upgrade the alternator to the Valeo with internal regulator. They have been very good over the years. Never seen one problem with many installs.
