Mystery 911 Camshafts???
I recently fell into a pair of 911 camshafts that I was told came from a 1983 911SC. I have attempted to find the part number in my reference materials (our sponsor's engine rebuilding book and my best internet friend Google), but haven't been able to identify these as a valid camshaft for the 1983 SC.
The camshaft part numbers are: 930.105.148.9R 930.105.147.9R Would any be able to offer me some advice on how I would go about determining if I can use these for an upgrade to my stock 911SC engine? I am thinking about having them reground to more a more aggressive profile, such as a 964 profile and swapping out my existing pistons with higher compression pistons such as the ones offered by JE. If these are already aggressive (perhaps the R is to designates a "racing" profile?) cam profiles, then I was thinking I might not need to have them reground as much as just sent out to be reconditioned? Also, does anyone have any experiences, good or bad, with Elgin or Webcam? I am going to send the cams out to have the work done if they can be reused, but cost is a little bit of a factor, which is why I am looking at reconditioning these old cams versus buying new ones for my application. I have a 1982 911SC which has had a total rebuild by a local Porsche mechanic in the last 5,000 miles and am thinking about practical ways to increase the hp a little in my daily driver. I would really appreciate some input from the expert re-builders on this forum, thank you in advance! Jeff W. |

I appreciate it, Tom. I also couldn't find my parts in the reference tables I had.
I guess my real question is how do I find out what the cam profile is and whether or not to just recondition it as is or go with a different grind. Since these didn't match up with a "standard" camshaft installed in an '83 SC (or any other model year 911), would one of the camshaft shops be able to give me some input before I make this decision? I should add that I've never sent anything out to be machined before and wondered which one of the shops might be able to tell me what I have and whether it is a better profile than the one I am considering (a 964 cam profile for my 911SC). Is one of them more "new-owner friendly" than the others? Thanks again to everyone for their much needed advice on this topic, Jeff |

Jeff
The numbers cast onto the camshaft body are the casting numbers not the finished part number. The casting numbers you cite look correct for an SC cam
