Oil Pump Stud Stripped

I'm putting together my 2.7 case as part of a rebuild. In the process of tightening the three oil pump nuts to 25 Nm, I hear a "pop" on the third bolt. Now the stud does not support any torque and I've consequently removed it (along with the case threads) from the case. What are my options now?

- Can I install a timesert/casesaver myself (I don't see a 8 x 1.25 casesaver in the Pelican catalog)?
- Assuming I can get one and I can install it myself, I also would guess this would require an expensive tool (Pelican lists a timesert installation kit for $169.99).
- Plan B: Any good shop in/near the Riverside area? Or does this have to be done at a machine shop (Ollies did the cases and already installed casesavers for all the head studs and a few other susceptible studs).

I have a stainless insert that works very well, drill to size and its self tapping. I ll post a picture tomorrow when I am in the garage.

You can put a time cert repair in there, but it may be a clue to a bigger issue with older mag cases, yes its possible that someone over tightened it but may just be rotten, test a few other areas for normal torque and see what happens, I have assembled these engines and had critical studs pull even the case savers because the parent material is just old and tired.

Mike - The issue with rotten cases is good to know when dealing with these magnesium units, however; I had a lot of machining work performed recently by Ollies. I would hope if my case was rotten, they would have mentioned something! With all of the money I have already invested in this case, I hope you're wrong in this instance.

I have no interest in the company, but the inserts are easy to install and work well. Google the web site for a number. I purchased from a company in Fredericksburg, Va but no longer have their info.

M8x1.25 time-serts are much less than $100. A whole kit is like $50.

Dave for that repair the kit above looks like it will work fine, I hope for your sake its an isolated issue, with Ollies doing all the other work I would say someone just over torqued that stud.

Check with McMaster-Carr, they have several types of inserts.

Using input from the collective reply of all of you, I located the following product:

E-Z Lok M8-1.25 Stainless Insert for Metal - 453-8



It says "Easy to Use Solution For Repairing Damaged Threads in Metal. Install With Standard Drill & Tap; NO Special Tools Needed. Corrosion Resistant. Ideal For Soft Metals Like Aluminum, Cast Iron, or Magnesium."

I'll check with my local hardware store tomorrow (McFadden-Dale Industrial Hardware - they're fantastic). If they don't have it, I'll jump on the internet and work on something else during the delay.

If that does not work I have 8x1.25 casesavers if you need some. the OD is 12x1.50

Another option if there is not a lot of thickness to work with you can install an oversize stud 10x1.50 on the case side.
